Gottipua : Beyond Borders

Synopsis

For over 500 years, young boys in the eastern part of India have embodied the feminine to serve god through the sacred dance tradition, Gotipua. A little-known practice that gave birth to one of India's most celebrated classical dance forms, Odissi. Today, despite performing at the G20 Summit, Buckingham Palace, and representing India in more than 30 countries, many Gotipua artists remain unknown in their own homeland. As the tradition stands at the crossroads of survival and extinction, Gottipua: Beyond Borders follows a journey through temples, gurukuls, archives, and diverse voices to uncover the many layers surrounding this extraordinary living heritage. Rather than offering simple answers, the film explores the intersections of faith, identity, gender, history, colonial influence, and cultural memory. It asks not only what it means to preserve an ancient tradition, but why societies choose to protect some histories while allowing others to disappear.
