The Eight Heroines / Ashtanayika
Synopsis
The concept of the Ashta-Nayika, or “Eight Heroines,” provides an understanding of how emotions, relationships, and spirituality are expressed across artistic traditions. Originating in Natya Shastra (c. 500 BCE), Sage Bharata’s foundational treatise on dramaturgy, dance, music, and poetics, this classification outlines eight types of heroines, each embodying a distinct emotional state in relation to her beloved. Each Nayika (Heroine)—expressing longing, separation, anticipation, fulfilment, or turmoil—offers artists a codified emotional vocabulary that is both culturally specific and universally resonant. Through expert interviews, curated performances, and visual analyses, the film shows how each interprets the Ashta-Nayika (Eight Heroines) paradigm. Highlighting the spiritual dimension of Indian aesthetics, where the heroine’s relationship with the hero is a metaphor of the soul’s journey toward the divine. UNESCO inscribed Natya Shastra in Memory of the World Register in 2025.
