The Valley of Health
Synopsis
In the 90s, Sittilingi, a remote, forested valley in Tamil Nadu, faced a severe healthcare crisis. One in five children died before their first year and maternal mortality was alarmingly high. The nearest hospital was 48km, and one with surgical capabilities was 100km away. Isolated by poor roads and infrequent public transportation, emergencies led to devastating results.
A turning point came when two doctors moved there and founded a primary health centre aimed at providing affordable healthcare. What began as a mud and thatch hut, sparked a revolution in healthcare.
Though the community was initially hesitant, improvements gradually built trust. Today, it functions as a nodal health centre for 25 villages in a 50km radius, run almost entirely by tribal people, and supported by doctors from all over the world. Over a span of decades, with timely clinical intervention and community-led care, infant mortality fell from 147 to 20, and maternal deaths were nearly eradicated
